Hotel offers eastern bloc chic at modern day prices

15 June 2007

Long after the Berlin wall has fallen, an enterprising new-old fashioned hotel \"Ostel\" has opened in Berlin to offer guests a communist era experience.

The hotel, complete with Spartan furnishings and brown wallpaper offers clients a taste of eastern bloc chic at modern day prices.

The hotel is a former ‘Plattenbauwohnung’, a mass-produced concrete apartment block favoured by the old regime. Much of the furnishing is authentic, having been saved by the hotels creators, two ex-circus performers, from old store rooms, private homes and furniture dealers.

Reward offered over US Athens embassy attack

20 March 2007

Greece and the US have both offered a reward of $1m for information that leads to arrests of the perpetrators of a grenade attack on the US embassy in Athens.

An extreme left-wing group called Revolutionary Struggle claims it carried out the attack in January. A grenade was fired from street level into the front of the embassy, causing minor damage but no-one was injured. The group explained that the attack was in response to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Portugal - Lisbon - Lisboa - Gloomy & Foggy Afternoon over Bridge 25 de Abril - 25th of April

The 25 de Abril Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril "25th of April Bridge") is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to the municipality of Almada on the left (south) bank of the Tejo river. It was inaugurated on August 6, 1966 and a train platform was added in 1999. Because of its similar coloring, it is often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA. In fact, it was built by the same company (American Bridge Company) that constructed the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and not the Golden Gate, also explaining its similarity in design. With a total length of 2,277 m, it is the 20th largest suspension bridge in the world. The upper platform carries six car lanes, the lower platform two train tracks. Until 1974, the bridge was named Salazar Bridge (Ponte Salazar).

After those very colorful photos, I thought I post one that has nearly no color. It was very foggy afternoon with some rain as well, definitely not a weather I would expect to see in mid August, however I really like the result of this shot.

Reflections Of Amsterdam - Double...

Unedited shot of buildings at the Singel canal in Amsterdam, reflected the canal. Taken with my Panasonic DMC-FZ8. No editing, no magic tricks, no Photoshop :)

I am such a lucky guy, after having worked several Fridays and even a Saturday in the last weeks, I am back to my old lazy schedule of working Monday - Thursday only. Whenever I tell somebody that I work 4 days a week, they get dreamy eyes and imagine how good their lives could be if they had the same reduced work hours, not knowing that everybody can ask his/her boss for less work, it's a new Dutch law, if you ask, they can't say 'No', and even though you'll lose 20% of your salary and vacation days, you'll gain 52 free days per year, and of course you'll pay 20% less taxes, it's a win-win situation that I've been abusing for my personal gains for manymany years already. I can only recommend it, and if I can convince only one person to at least look at the possibility of reducing their work load and increasing their fun part of life by posting this picture, my mission was successful :)

Thank God it's Friday and I don't have to work, yay :D

I've made a wicked reflection movie of the canal too, check it out on my YouTube page!
